CLASS OF 1964

John Bowings
Wife: Kathleen (Thornell) Bowings (Class of 1965)

I served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 – 1970, and married my high school sweetheart, Kathleen Thornell (SCHS Class of ’65), at Randolph AFB, in 1967. I began my 38-year computer career in Japan supporting very early military satellite surveillance and SR-71 "Blackbird" reconnaissance for Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, and got my honorable discharge while at Strategic Air Command underground operations at Offutt AFB, in Omaha, Nebraska. I attended Delaware State University, in Dover, Delaware, got a BS degree in Business Administration in 1974, and moved my family to Plano, Texas. Kathleen and I adopted four children and now have seven grandchildren. I held computer management positions with several Dallas Fortune 500 companies before specializing in Disaster Recovery and Security nearly 25 years ago. I’ve consulted to a number of Fortune 500 companies, as well as implemented and managed recovery and security programs for several Dallas area businesses. I’ve responded to several actual disaster incidents for companies, as well as several disasters within our community as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. I am a Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP), a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and a Competent ToastMaster (CTM).
For those of you who recollect the passion I had for fast cars; it has never diminished!

Diane E. Andrews (Harris) Evans

My name is Diane E. Andrews (Harris) Evans, the reason being is that I was never Diane Harris except while attending Schertz-Cibolo High School as my stepfather insisted I go by Harris, truly I was Andrews. Now that we have gotten through this I will fill you in on what has been going on in my life since graduation in 1964. Firstly and most importantly I have three lovely children. Dennis who is 39, not married travels setting up stages and sound for the super stars such as Reba McIntire. He is on the road almost all of the time so we don’t get to see him very much. Then there is Rich who is 34, he is an attorney and married to an attorney. They both tell me that they are going to start planning a family next year. I think it is high time they did so since they are both 34 years of age. Rich graduated 2nd in his law class and made the June issue of Texas Monthly announcing the rising star attorneys of Texas. Needless to say I am very proud of him! Lastly, my daughter, Ariane, 26, is the mother of my only living grandchild whom I adore. Since 1964 I have lived from Alaska to Hawaii where I met my children’s father. I was married to him for 22 years, which ended in divorce although a friendly one. We are great friends to this day. I remarried twelve years ago to my husband Earl who some you know passed away four days after my Grandson, Taryn passed away. He was such a great friend and truly missed. It has been a terrible year having lost two loved ones so close to me. As far as personal accomplishments I attended the Institute of Finance of New York where I studied to be a Broker. At Th time I was Administrative Assistant to the Senior Vice President of one of the largest brokerage firms in the world, Kidder Peabody that is no longer in business under the same name as there was a take over. Later, I left Kidder to work as an Assistant to the President of Corporate Printing in New York City, later moving to Texas. Since in Texas I have worked at a Finance Director for the City of Port Aransas and also at the same time held the duel position as Tax Assessor-Collector for all three entities, city, school and water until I became ill. I was the only person that held this duel position in the history of Port Aransas. Later, I worked as a Financial Aid Director for Massey Business College, managed a couple of restaurants and clubs. Presently I own and operate a small kennel, Dream Maker Kennel, where I breed five different breeds of dogs; the rare Brussel Griffon, Yorkshire Terriers, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Maltese. At the time my husband passed away I was attending Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. Until my kennel gets going successfully I work as a waitperson at a small cafe. I work four days a week and then the remaining time I concentrate on my 16 dogs. Going to the Vets is a real riot. I hope this will be the last year that I will have to work outside of the home as I am trying to build my business so that I will be able to take care of myself without any worries. Well there you have it or some of it. I am so glad to be able to come to the reunion and visit with all of my high school friends. This will be quite an event and I am looking forward to seeing ya’ll.

Nancy and I went fishing tonight for three hours and caught 7 trout and a nice smallmouth bass twelve miles south. Tomorrow I'll work 8AM until about ten or eleven PM. Maybe I'll get lucky and there won't be any patients in the Unit. We love it here. This summer we spent two weeks in Oregon at our niece’s wedding, visited Roger and his family in Vancouver Wash, spent great days on the beach, fished the Deshutes River, did some digging at a, get this, Rock Ranch, and watched 55 of Richard's baseball games Mt and Canada. Last summer we spent a week with Tom and his family in Oregon at the beach and played in the sun, sail boarding, catching King Salmon, enjoyed each others company immensely. Life is good. Retirement is on the horizon, but not until Richard and Katie'B complete their education. Katie'B is already talking about masters degrees and Richard has a long long way to go until he has completed his professional education. I wish you all the very best. Nancy (Coleman) Knight
Husband: Jimmie Knight

After graduation, I continued my education. Jim and I were married in January 1965 and we’ll celebrate 40 years of marriage in January. In July 1965 we traveled to his home state of Oregon taking in the sights of New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California. I fell in love with the West Coast and Oregon. I learned to fish the swollen rivers of Oregon catching fresh water trout and catfish; walking in the snow of Crater Lake and looking down into the purest water of Clear Lake. We loved the swift waters of Umpqua and North Umpqua rivers, which had 20 miles of the best fly fishing anywhere. We watched salmon climb ladders and whales and seals playing in the ocean. We awoke to the view of Mt. Hood every morning. When we returned to Texas, we both settled into jobs; Jim with City Public Service; me eventually in civil service with the Army at Fort Sam Houston. Our first son, Brian, was born in 1968. Two years later our youngest son Christopher was born. We have two wonderful grandsons, ages 9 and 14 months old. While Jim’s job was centered in San Antonio, I worked and taught in the medical logistics field and traveled to the Army’s medical facilities throughout the world. My favorite memories are of Germany, Japan and Panama, panning for gold in Alaska, walking the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, touring a nuclear submarine, the battlegrounds of Gettysburg, the exhibits of the Smithsonian, the Presidio of San Francisco, New York and the historic West Point. The flip side of the coin was leading the logistics BRAC team in closing or the realignment of Army hospitals. My travels throughout my 33 years blessed me with memories and friendships that I will forever treasure. About 8 years ago, a cousin who had been searching for Jim contacted him. He comes from a very historical family. His great grandfather and his brothers were heroes in the civil war. The seven Knight brothers fought for General Hood of Hood’s Texas Brigade. Because of their sharpshooter ability, and the brothers being expert marksmen, several were given one of the latest rifles from England to fight in the war. Of the many men that fought for General Hood, only 15 percent returned. All seven brothers returned. One was awarded a Silver Star for killing a General at Gettysburg. Jim’s dad had 5 sisters and one brother. The brother died early on leaving no children. Jim was the last of the male Knights until our two sons and grandson came along. We attend a Knight Cousin Family Reunion every few years. Jim is also distantly related to the late country singer Jim Reeves. Jim’s grandparents adopted and raised the noted World War II cartoonist Bill Mauldin. Jim and I have been retired for several years. I painted for years and am now into quilting. We love to travel and have many cousins to visit as well as other family members. When home, we especially love taking care of grandson Austin.

Our daughter and son-in-law have blessed us with a grandson and granddaughter and our son and daughter-in-law have blessed us with a granddaughter.

Delores (Slade) King

I had hip and shoulder surgery that was successful. I am in therapy and can walk a bit. My mom will stay with me thru October. We had some roof rippling, downed trees, wet garage, no TV or phone service (until possibly January, 2006), but we do have electricity. We are all hot & wanting computer and phone desperately. We are eating MRE army meals and bottled water. Wish I could communicate. Will when able. Thanks so much for your prayers. We will be OK. Miss you. Love & best wishes.

Martha (Slade) Barca

I live on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and have been here since 1967 (I worked in Boston before that). I have 5 children (4 boys & 1 girl) and the youngest, my daughter Sarah, graduated from Yale this past May, so we are done with college. Yahoo!! My oldest son is married and has 2 children-Gavin and Gabrielle-they are too precious. I work as a critical care nurse, right now in Cardiovascular Surgery ICU. My husband is a retired Math teacher. We have an old house here, built in 1824, a one mile walk to the beach. It feels pretty empty now, but it’s lots of fun when the kids come home. It’s been really fun to hear from everyone. I talked to Pat Galloway on the phone. I won’t make it down this year, but maybe sometime in the future. It is already getting chilly (40’s) last night as opposed to there. It has been many years, but it’s funny how the memories come back when you see everyone’s name. Best wishes to all.
